Why Is My AC Not Cooling My House in Las Vegas?

It's the middle of July in Las Vegas. It's 112 degrees outside. You walk inside expecting relief โ€” and your house feels like a sauna. Your AC is running but it's just blowing warm air. Sound familiar?

This is one of the most common calls we get at Vida Air. The good news is there are a handful of reasons this happens, and some of them you can actually check yourself before calling a technician. Here's exactly what to look for.

1. A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

This is the #1 cause of poor AC performance in Las Vegas โ€” and it's completely preventable. In the desert, dust and debris are everywhere. Your air filter catches all of it, and if you haven't changed it in a while, airflow through your system can drop dramatically.

When airflow is restricted, your AC can't properly cool the air moving through it. The result? Warm or barely-cool air coming from your vents even though the system is running non-stop.

Check this first: Pull out your air filter and hold it up to the light. If you can't see light through it, it needs to be replaced. In Las Vegas, filters should be changed every 30โ€“60 days in summer โ€” not every 90 days like the box says.

2. Low Refrigerant (Freon Leak)

Refrigerant is the substance that actually absorbs heat from the air inside your home. If your system has a refrigerant leak โ€” which is more common in older systems and in Las Vegas where units run constantly โ€” there isn't enough refrigerant to cool the air properly.

Signs of low refrigerant include: warm air from vents, ice forming on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, a hissing or bubbling sound near the outdoor unit, and your AC running for hours without cooling the house down.

โš ๏ธ Don't ignore this one. Running your system with low refrigerant can damage the compressor โ€” the most expensive part of your AC. If you suspect a leak, call a licensed HVAC technician immediately.

3. A Failing Capacitor or Contactor

Las Vegas HVAC technicians will tell you: capacitors and contactors are the most commonly replaced parts in this city. The extreme heat here โ€” we're talking 110ยฐ+ summers โ€” puts enormous stress on these electrical components.

The capacitor is what starts and keeps the motors running. When it fails, your outdoor unit might not start at all, or it might run but not cool effectively. The contactor is like a relay switch โ€” when it wears out, the compressor and fan motors can't get power properly.

Both are inexpensive parts and quick fixes for a licensed tech. If a technician finds one failed, have them check both while they're there โ€” they often go together.

4. Frozen Evaporator Coil

This one sounds backwards โ€” your AC is freezing up when you need it to cool down. But it happens. The evaporator coil (the indoor coil) can freeze over when airflow is restricted or when refrigerant is low. When it's frozen, the ice blocks heat transfer and your AC can no longer cool the air.

If you see ice on the copper lines near your indoor unit, or if your AC suddenly starts blowing warm air after running fine all day, a frozen coil could be the culprit.

What to do: Turn the AC off and run just the fan for 2โ€“3 hours to let the coil thaw. Then replace your air filter and turn the AC back on. If it freezes again, you have a refrigerant or airflow problem that needs a professional.

5. Dirty Condenser Coils

Your outdoor unit (the condenser) releases heat from inside your home to the outside. If the condenser coils are caked with dust, dirt, and debris โ€” which happens quickly in Las Vegas โ€” the unit can't release heat efficiently. The result is reduced cooling capacity even though everything is technically "working."

You can gently rinse the outdoor unit with a garden hose (power off first) to remove surface debris. But if the coils are heavily clogged, a professional cleaning is the right call.

6. Your AC Is the Wrong Size for Your Home

An AC unit that's too small for your home will run constantly but never fully cool it โ€” especially on a 115-degree Las Vegas afternoon. This is more common than people think, especially in newer or recently renovated homes where the original system wasn't properly sized.

If your AC has always struggled to keep up even when it was new, a load calculation from a licensed HVAC contractor can tell you whether your system is appropriately sized for your square footage and insulation level.

7. Leaky or Poorly Insulated Ductwork

In Las Vegas, attic temperatures can hit 150โ€“160ยฐF in July. If your ductwork runs through the attic and has leaks or thin insulation, the cool air your AC produces gets heated before it ever reaches your vents. You might be losing 20โ€“30% of your cooling capacity to leaky ducts.

Signs of duct issues include rooms that never cool properly, higher-than-expected energy bills, and visible gaps or disconnected sections in accessible ductwork.

8. The Thermostat Is the Problem

Before assuming the worst, check your thermostat. Make sure it's set to COOL (not HEAT or just FAN), that the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature, and that it's working properly. A faulty thermostat can send wrong signals to your AC or stop communicating with it altogether.

Also check if the batteries need replacing โ€” yes, it's that simple sometimes.

When to Call a Professional

If you've checked your filter, verified your thermostat settings, and your system is still blowing warm air โ€” it's time to call. Refrigerant leaks, electrical failures, frozen coils, and compressor issues are not DIY fixes. Attempting to add refrigerant yourself is illegal without EPA certification, and mishandling electrical components can be dangerous.

Vida Air is licensed (Lic. # 0091263), bonded, and insured. We serve Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin, and the surrounding valley. Call us at (702) 556-4840 โ€” we respond fast because we know how serious the heat is here.
