AC Not Turning On in Las Vegas? 8 Things to Check Before You Call

Your AC stopped working. It's summer in Las Vegas. Panic is setting in. Before you call a technician โ€” and sometimes even before you need to โ€” there are 8 quick things you can check yourself that might save you a service call entirely.

This is the same checklist our Vida Air technicians run through when they arrive at a job. Work through it systematically and you might have your AC back on in 10 minutes.

Check 1 โ€” The Thermostat

It sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how often this is the answer. Check three things:

Quick fix: If the thermostat screen is blank, try replacing the batteries first. This is the #1 overlooked fix in HVAC service calls.

Check 2 โ€” The Circuit Breaker

Your AC runs on two separate circuits โ€” one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser unit. Either one can trip. Go to your electrical panel and look for any breakers that are in the middle position (tripped) or fully flipped to the OFF side.

If you find a tripped breaker, flip it fully to OFF and then back to ON. Wait 30 minutes before turning the AC back on โ€” this gives the system time to reset safely.

โš ๏ธ Important: If the breaker trips again immediately after you reset it, stop. A breaker that keeps tripping means there's an electrical problem in the system. Call a licensed HVAC technician โ€” do not keep resetting it.

Check 3 โ€” The Air Filter

A severely clogged filter can cause your AC to shut down completely as a safety mechanism. The system overheats when it can't move air, and the safety cutoff kicks in.

Pull the filter out and check it. In Las Vegas, filters get dirty fast. If it's grey and clogged, replace it with a new one before restarting the system.

Check 4 โ€” The Condensate Drain Line

Your AC removes humidity from the air and that water drains out through a condensate line. If that line gets clogged โ€” which is common in Las Vegas due to hard water โ€” the drain pan fills up and a float switch shuts the system off to prevent water damage.

Look for a PVC pipe near your indoor air handler and check if water is backing up. You can try flushing it with a cup of white vinegar or using a wet-dry vacuum on the drain line end. If the float switch triggered, once the clog is cleared the system should restart.

Check 5 โ€” The Indoor Air Handler Switch

Near your indoor air handler unit (typically in a closet, utility room, or attic) there is a power switch that looks exactly like a regular light switch. It's easy to accidentally flip off โ€” especially if it's in a utility closet.

Make sure this switch is in the ON position. This is another one that technicians find more often than you'd expect.

Check 6 โ€” The Outdoor Disconnect

Next to your outdoor condenser unit there should be a disconnect box โ€” a small grey box mounted on the wall. Open it and make sure the disconnect (a block or switch inside) is properly seated and hasn't been pulled out. Sometimes these get pulled during a previous service call and not properly reinserted.

Check 7 โ€” The Outdoor Unit Itself

Go outside and look at the outdoor condenser unit. Is the fan on top spinning? Is the unit making any sound at all? A few things to note:

Las Vegas-specific tip: Check that debris isn't blocking the outdoor unit. Desert winds blow all kinds of material against the condenser โ€” cottonwood seeds, plastic bags, tumbleweeds. Clear anything blocking airflow around all four sides of the unit.

Check 8 โ€” Give It 30 Minutes After a Reset

If you reset a breaker, cleared a clog, or replaced a filter โ€” give the system at least 30 minutes before deciding it still isn't working. AC systems have internal delays and pressure equalizing mechanisms that take time. What seems like a broken AC is sometimes a system that just needs a few minutes to restart properly.

When None of This Works

If you've gone through all 8 checks and your AC still isn't turning on, the problem is most likely one of these: a failed capacitor, a failed contactor, a refrigerant leak, a failed compressor, or a more complex electrical issue. All of these require a licensed HVAC technician.

Don't let it go too long in Las Vegas summer. Temperatures inside an uncooled home can become dangerous within hours โ€” especially for elderly residents and young children. Call Vida Air at (702) 556-4840 for fast same-day service across the Las Vegas Valley.
